TV You with XO - An Interview

***** Interview with XO *****

Q. When did XO start? Tell us about the history...
Jeff: XO started in 2004 after Parkside View, our first band had come to an end. My brother Jake and I wrote most of the music we played early on, mostly Jake, but we joined some great bands and toured playing other peoples songs in our late teens and twenties. We released the Some Day ep (2009) while living in Atlanta, Georgia. On the recording I played drums/guitar/vox/keys, Jake played bass/guitar/vox/keys, we recorded with Matt Malpass and I wrote the songs. We moved to Long Beach and recorded the Fault 7” (2013) and our full length album Heart (2014) with Parker Case. Joseph Assef played drums on everything but Fault and No Feeling, played by me. Joe and Parker played live with us during this time. Currently the band is me, Jake and Alan Connor on drums.

Q: Who are your influences?
My Bloody Valentine, Joy Division, Elliott Smith, The Beatles and Red House Painters are some of my favorites.

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Red House Painters - Rollercoaster
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
The Beatles - The White Album
Nick Drake - Pink Moon

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Full of joy. I love feeling connected to everyone however it happens.

Q. How do you describe XO sounds?
I mostly use genres like shoegaze and emo. The sounds are a combination of things but I like to make them sound large and heavy.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
I write a song and show it to Jake. He gives me his input and we jam through it a ton in a rehearsal space with our drummer and shape it. We record it together as a band and overdub guitars, piano, percussion and vocals. Mixing takes a while because we go through several focal points in the mix to bring up and then bury again. It’s tedious but we love the end result, mastered and ready to release.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Turnover, Cloakroom, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beaches, The Cherry Wave and Hammock.

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
We recorded a live session with part time punks, covering MBV (“to here knows when” & “you never should”) a long with “love” and “waste” by us. Hope to release that on 7” in the near future. Besides MBV, Elliott Smith.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We released a new single “tv you” on our label last month. We’ve been working on a new album and will release it next year, 2018. We recorded with our friend Jon Berry and we’re mixing it ourselves. Can’t wait to share it!

Q: Any parting words?
Thanks for your thoughtful questions and your killer dedication to shoegaze music, new and old.
